Last Year’s Predictions When I write this post every January, I like to keep myself honest by glancing back at the previous year’s predictions to ga...

Sustainable Web Design, An Excerpt – A List Apart

In the 1950s, many in the elite running community had begun to believe it wasn’t possible to run a mile in less than four minutes. Runners had been attempting it since the late 19th century and were beginning to draw the conclusion that the human body simply wasn’t built for the task.  Article Continues Below But on May 6, 1956, Roger Bannister took everyone by surprise. It was a cold, wet day in Oxford, England—conditions no one expected to lend themselves to record-setting—and yet Bannister did just that, running a mile in 3:59.4 and becoming the first person in the record books to run a mile in under four minutes.  This shift in the benchmark had profound effects; the world now knew that the four-minute mile was possible. Bannister’s record lasted only forty-six days, when ...

Items Every Web Designer Should Have in Their Office

Web designers are fortunate in that our work can be done from just about anywhere. That said, most of us still tend to gravitate towards either home or commercial office space. Why? Because dealing with coffee shop Wi-Fi just isn’t conducive to getting things done. Plus, the whole pandemic thing made sitting amongst strangers a no-go for most of the world. But not just any old office setup will do. There are some items that go hand-in-hand with comfort and productivity. Things that web designers either can’t or shouldn’t go without. Twitter Adds Spaces Access via the Web as it Continues to Develop its Audio Social Platform

Twitter has taken another steady leap forward in the evolving audio social sphere by adding Spaces access via the web, meaning that you can now tune into Twitter Spaces from your desktop PC. It's not perfect as yet. I tried to tune into a couple of Spaces and got as far as this screen, which remained stagnant for as long as I waited. But early teething problems aside, the ability to access Spaces on the web is a significant advance, as it not only opens up the option to even more users, but it also enables hosts and speakers to use their PC microphones and audio set-ups, which will lend itself to more professional sounding, higher quality Spaces streams. As you can see in the image above, when you go to join a Space on your PC, you'll first get a preview of the Space, similar to the mo...

Why Thinking Ahead Is Crucial in Web Design

The difference between building a great website and a mediocre one is usually determined very early on. It’s often a matter of a web designer painting their project into a virtual “corner”. That’s where a design becomes inflexible and unable to accommodate various use cases. This tends to happen in the prototyping phase. We spend lots of time and creative energy on an idea that looks awesome. Our clients might love it just as much as we do. But only when we actually start to build it do we begin to fully understand the consequences. A design mockup serves as a compass for our website projects. If we fail to think ahead with regards to what certain elements require, it could mean being stuck in a bad situation. The end result is a site that has to make some serious compromises in order to w...

The Right Way to Add Recurring Revenue to Your Web Design Business

Booking new projects is a key revenue driver for any freelance web designer. But a lot of time and effort goes into both finding projects and getting the details hammered out. Then you still have to do the actual work. It’s not always an efficient process. And, unless those projects are quite large, you might also need to find other ways to boost cashflow. Constantly chasing that next opportunity can be tiring – and may not be enough to sustain your business. That’s why recurring revenue is so attractive. As the name suggests, it’s money that comes in regular intervals – weekly, monthly or yearly. It’s something you can depend on and, once a client is signed up, won’t require repeated sales pitches. Ideally, it will allow you to better focus on design and development. Sound like something ...

Core Web Vitals and the Page Experience Update: What They Mean for Local Businesses

Google is currently putting together the final changes for a search algorithm update that they’ve announced will land in May 2021.  The update is being called the Page Experience update because of its focus on usability rather than things like keywords or search relevance. Google has already provided some information on the update, which aims to measure and potentially rank the experience that a user encounters when visiting a page. The fact that Google have given so much warning about the update says all you need to know about how seriously to take it. We know it’ll impact organic search results but as of yet, there’s no word on whether there will be any specific impact on Google My Business rankings. Although this update is due to hit the algorithm in May, there’s no reason not to get ah...

The Future of Web Software Is HTML-over-WebSockets – A List Apart

The future of web-based software architectures is already taking form, and this time it’s server-rendered (again). Papa’s got a brand new bag: HTML-over-WebSockets and broadcast everything all the time. Article Continues Below The dual approach of marrying a Single Page App with an API service has left many dev teams mired in endless JSON wrangling and state discrepancy bugs across two layers. This costs dev time, slows release cycles, and saps the bandwidth for innovation. But a new WebSockets-driven approach is catching web developers’ attention. One that reaffirms the promises of classic server-rendered frameworks: fast prototyping, server-side state management, solid rendering performance, rapid feature development, and straightforward SEO. One that enables multi-user coll...

How To Build an Email List With Live Web Chat and Automated Messaging

I learned the basics of how to build an email list from scratch some time ago. But it wasn’t until I needed to know how to build an email list before launching a new product that I learned how to build an email list with a website chatbot. Using a website form to collect emails usually results in a conversion rate between 1% to 10%, and the average website conversion rate is roughly 4%. However, with a chatbot, your email capture conversion rate can skyrocket. In fact, the website chatbot I’m about to show you increased our website conversion rate by over 100%. The Potential of AR in Web Design

Over the years, experts have repeatedly discussed the possible impact of mixed realities on web design. Concepts like AR and VR are expected to have the potential to change the way that we interact with websites on a fundamental level. Now that we’re in the year 2021, however, discussions about AR aren’t just observational anymore. The age of mixed-reality interfaces is here, in everything from Pokémon Go, to Snapchat filters. The Importance of Documentation for Web Developers

In the development realm of mobile, web, and desktop apps or JavaScript libraries, documentation plays an important role in determining the app’s success. But if you have ever done documentation, you’d agree with me that it is pretty much the least favorite things for developers to do. Unlike writing code (which is what developers signed up to do), documentation has to be easily digested by everyone. Technically, we have to translate a machine language (code) into a language that is understandable to humans, which is tougher than it sounds. Although it can be a real burdensome, writing the documentation is important and will deliver advantages for your users, your colleagues, and especially yourself.
