Google Maps Launches AI-Powered Local Business Search

Google is introducing an experimental feature in Google Maps that uses AI to help users discover local businesses that meet specific needs. AI-Powered Discovery The new feature utilizes large language models to analyze Google Maps’ database of over 250 million places, photos, ratings, reviews, and more. After entering a conversational search query, Google Maps will suggest personalized recommendations for businesses, events, restaurants, and activities in the area. For example, you can ask Maps to recommend “places with a vintage vibe in San Francisco,” and it will return suggestions like clothing boutiques, record stores, and flea markets. The results are categorized with photos and review highlights to explain why they meet your criteria. You can refine your search by asking follow-up...

Google Confirms Business ‘Openness’ As Local Ranking Factor

Recent findings by SEO professionals suggest that Google has recalibrated its local search algorithm, placing more emphasis on a business’s listed hours of operation as a key ranking signal. According to Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky, the trend became noticeable after the November 2023 core update, leading to businesses that appear as closed being significantly less visible in local search results. 😱Well the news is out, the new ranking factor we are seeing that has a massive impact on ranking is HOURS. With these updates, users will be able to manage their Location History with greater precision. The changes could, however, affect analytics data marketers utilize for location targeting. How Local Businesses Can Rank For Popular Near Me Searches

A recent feature on The Verge highlighted businesses that try to get an edge in local search rankings with clever names like Thai Food Near Me. So, I set out to discover if this strategy could impact local rankings and, more importantly, if other local businesses could replicate it. Before I get started, I should preface this with some good and bad news. Bad News: Distance Is An Important Ranking Factor Most restaurants will not rank as the best restaurants near me unless they are physically located near the search user’s location. The reason? One of the three critical ranking factors for Google local search results is distance. Suppose a restaurant owner wants people in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York to discover their dining establishment with the term best restaurant near...

Google Reveals Best & Worst Times For Holiday Travel

With the holiday season fast approaching, Google has released data to help people navigate traffic and crowds more efficiently. Analyzing trends from last year’s holidays, Google published a blog post highlighting the optimal times to travel, shop, and run errands. “Whether you’re hitting the road early or heading out on Thanksgiving day, we looked at traffic patterns to help plan your trip,” writes Google’s Madison Gouveia in the blog post. Thanksgiving Travel Tips Google recommends departing on Monday or Tuesday around 8 p.m. local time for those driving before Thanksgiving. Avoid the peak traffic period on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. On Thanksgiving Day, the best strategy is to leave before noon or after 4 p.m. to miss the peak congestion between 1-4 p.m. “Heading out on Than...

Elon Musk calls LinkedIn ‘Cringe’—Announces…

It seems we can’t go for one week without talking about Elon Musk, but the news simply writes itself. In a recent post, The Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI owner announced his intentions to compete with LinkedIn by incorporating job listings into X (formerly Twitter). In trademark Musk fashion, the Twitter boss told his followers he couldn’t use LinkedIn because its ‘cringe level is so high’. Presumably, this reveals that Musk believes his own ‘cringe levels’ to be remarkably low in comparison. Whatever you say, Elon. In the tweet, Musk also announced that he would make the X competitor to LinkedIn ‘cool’. It’s impossible to predict what this entails.  Perhaps Musk’s idea of cool is making his job site look dark, edgy, and brooding, much like the ...

Reddit Updates its Design to Improve the…

The social media organization revealed its new update in a post on Monday. Reddit’s overarching goal is to make it easier for those coming to the platform for the first time to find engaging, relevant content. To bring this plan to fruition, Reddit has simplified the search page by introducing a new layout. On mobile, users previously received a confusing blend of posts, comments, and communities when entering specific queries. Now, the search results will prioritize posts over all other elements, making it more straightforward for logged-out users to find interesting content. On Reddit’s desktop client, logged-out users will now see a sticky sidebar, allowing them to scroll through content to find relevant posts and communities. To make the ...

Twitter Rebrand: Musk Finally Finds a Use for…

Initially, there was perverse enjoyment in watching an incredibly privileged person held to their word, lose a few billion, and get humbled a little. But it’s starting to feel like either this is a $44bn tax write-off, or Musk has been swallowed by his ego and doesn’t have anyone on staff brave enough to say “no” to him. Musk, who owns SpaceX, and recently launched xAI, has been seeking a side project for his x.com domain name — which, to be fair, is a cool domain — and it looks like he’s found one in the social-network-formerly-known-as-Twitter. Musk has been talking up a “do everything” app for some time and suggested that Twitter was a useful stepping stone before he acquired the platform in March. By all accounts, it is phenomenally ha...

OpenAI Accused of Data Theft in California

AI technology allows users to input a few words or phrases and generate output with a level of sophistication that is startlingly similar to human language. ChatGPT is currently the most successful attempt to code human language simulation, and companies such as Microsoft and Adobe are tapping into its potential to refine their products. However, ChatGPT scrapes the web to teach itself, examining content written by humans, and attempting to define logical rules that will allow it to regurgitate the text in a fresh format. The California lawsuit alleges: violation of the Communications Privacy act; violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse act; violation of the California Invasion of Privacy act; violation of the California Unfair Competition...

Apple Opts for AR over VR at WWDC

Officially named Apple Vision Pro, Apple has spent years quietly developing the product, and the fact that we’re getting a preview now is a strong indication that Apple thinks both the product and the timing are right — ridiculous charging point on the Apple Mouse excluded, Apple rarely gets these things wrong. There have been several false starts for VR/AR headsets. Google Glass was officially retired in March, and HTC’s Vive makes you look, and feel, like a Borg. Many people will see Apple’s entrance into the market as a saturation point. What is more significant is that thanks to Apple, Augmented Reality appears to have won out over nausea-inducing Virtual Reality. With sales of VR/AR headsets declining by over 50% last year, the prospe...

The Story Behind Hootsuite’s ‘Proud Mamas’ Mother’s Day Tribute

It’s not every day you find yourself in your parents’ backyard in Florida, filming a Hootsuite product demo video in a kiddie pool. But, in April, there I was: just a social media manager doing what we do best—doing whatever it takes to make something dazzling for our social channels. After an hour of getting ready and organizing my set, I tragically realized my camera wasn’t working properly, that the wind was interfering with my audio, and the script I was reading off of was significantly longer than I thought it was. “MOM?” I yelled. My mom poked her head out the back door. “Can I help now?” she replied with a goofy grin. “Yes. Please come help me.” I said, only slightly defeated that I couldn’t do this alone. “Show me what to do,” she said, eagerly standing over my tripod. We ...

GBP Suspension and Reinstatement Chaos

If you’re following the guidelines correctly, Google Business Profile (GBP) suspensions should just be for major problems, right? And, getting your profile reinstated shouldn’t take weeks upon weeks, either. But, for a few weeks in October, it seemed that all it took to get suspended was looking at your GBP the wrong way, and the current response time for profile reinstatement is nearly a month. So what’s been going on? What happened: a bug caused Google Business Profile suspensions to skyrocket Ben Fisher, Google Diamond Product Expert and owner of Steady Demand, explained to BrightLocal over email that there were a number of causes for suspension at the time: “Causes for suspension right now: Hitting the verify button (instant suspension) Adding website parameters (33% suspended) Edi...

4 Key Local Search Updates Rolling Out In 2022

Wednesday, September 28 saw Google’s Search On 2022 event; a conference announcing the newest features arriving to Google. We’ve rounded up all the exciting local search updates coming to Google this year, as outlined at the event.  Multisearch Near Me  “Your camera is the next keyboard” explained Prabhakar Raghavan, Senior Vice President at Google. Updates to Multisearch will now include ‘near me’ terminology. Users will be able to search through photos and images, alongside fewer words, to find what they are looking for, and stores nearby that sell it. Whilst we have known about this update for a few months, it’s now been confirmed that this will start rolling out across the US.  Find the food you love  You’ll now be able to search (using both text, and images) for a specific dish. How Brands Can Support Indigenous Communities on Social—the Right Way

There is a growing interest among businesses, large and small, to add their voices to the nationwide acknowledgment of the trauma inflicted upon Indigenous children at Canada’s Indian Residential Schools. This was amplified in 2021 with the location of nearly a thousand unmarked graves at sites of the now-shuttered institutions—and we know thousands more have yet to be discovered. On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it’s important for Indigenous people (and, frankly, for non-Indigenous people) to see businesses and brands honour those who lost their lives through the 165-year program of assimilation. It’s also important for us as Indigenous people to see them pay tribute to those who survived their years at the notorious schools. But deploying the hashtag #TruthAndRecon...

The Helpful Content Update – BrightLocal

Just over a month ago, on August 18, 2022, Google announced an update to their algorithm that got people both fearful and excited. The update itself started rolling out a week later on August 25, and Google confirmed it was going to take a couple of weeks before people saw an impact. This change to the algorithm was named the Helpful Content Update (HCU). And, for the first time in a while, SEOs around the world thought they were going to see some seismic activity in the search engine results pages (SERPs), rather than small blips. Then, right after the rollout for the HCU had finished, they dropped another update on us. This update was the September 2022 Core Algorithm Update. So what actually happened? Where are we a few weeks down the line? Did people see their sites plummeting into ...

Adobe Has Acquired You | Webdesigner Depot Webdesigner Depot » Blog Archive

There were mixed reactions on Thursday morning when Adobe announced it had acquired Figma. Excited press releases extolling the benefits of the “collaboration” followed the news. Dylan Field, founder and CEO of Figma, said: “There is a huge opportunity for us to accelerate the growth and innovation of the Figma platform with access to Adobe’s technology…” The reaction from the design community has been a little less enthusiastic. The problem for the design industry is that we’ve been here before. The acquisition of Macromedia followed a period in which Adobe tried to compete, failed to update its legacy code, lost the battle, and purchased the victor. You only need to look at the number of former Macromedia products in Adobe’s stable (zero) to see where Figma’s heading. Figma has grown...

What’s Going On with Service-area Business Rankings?

Google may have rolled out a local search ranking update around September 7th. Local SEOs in the Local Search Forum are reporting ranking drops for service-area businesses (SABs) on mobile, with some SAB Google Business Profiles suddenly not visible on desktop. These drops in rankings have only been seen in Local Pack results, and not in organic rankings. These changes in rankings seem to have started happening around September 7, suggesting a change in the local algorithm focussed on SABs, on or around this date. Sterling Sky‘s Joy Hawkins has said: “I’m hearing a few cases like this lately and I’m starting to wonder if it’s related to the algorithm updates.” However, she is not able to provide specific advice at this time. As you’ll see below, the whole local SEO community is curren...

The Rise of Social Search: Transforming the Way Local Businesses Are Found

Over the past few months, we’ve seen major changes in both the ways users consume social media and the opportunities presented to local businesses by new social media search functionalities.  In July, we reported on Instagram’s new immersive map, potentially changing the game for local business discovery. Since then, it’s also been reported that TikTok is the go-to search engine for Gen Z, with 40% of Gen Z users preferring the video sharing app, and Instagram, over Google Search.  Naturally, TikTok is jumping on product developments, improving its search functionality, and even testing a ‘nearby’ feed.  We’ve also seen Twitter introduce Location Spotlight for local businesses, which displays important business information and integrates with Google Maps to help customers find them. &#...

Expanding Our Local Data Aggregator Coverage with GPS Network and YP Network

We’ve expanded our Local Data Aggregator coverage with the addition of two new networks: GPS Network and YP Network. GPS Network It might sound pretty obvious, but it’s vitally important to ensure potential customers can actually find where your business is located. But, updating outdated or conflicting location information is still a challenge that local businesses frequently have to tackle. Our own research shows that 39% of consumers would either jump ship to an alternative business or give up their search entirely if they encountered incorrect address information for a local business. That’s where the GPS Network comes in. The GPS Network ensures a business’s location data is available and accurate on five of the most widely used navigation apps: TomTom Waze Here Uber Navmii Coll...

WordPress 6.0 Lives Up To The Hype

WordPress 6.0 has been released, and another niche jazz musician will be enjoying extra Spotify royalties next month. WordPress 6, named for latin-jazz musician Arturo O’Farrill, is the realization of a change of direction the WordPress Foundation adopted several years ago. All versions of WordPress now power around 42% of the web. That’s approximately 810,000,000 sites. If you looked at each site for a single second, without pausing to blink, it would take you over 25 years to see the home page of each one — of course, if you factor in how long a typical WordPress site takes to load it would take well over a century. Some people (i.e., me) have been predicting the decline of WordPress for so long that sooner or later, we were bound to be correct. And, despite its astonishing reach,...

Understand Ranking Performance at a Glance with Average Google Position

It’s a big day here at Brightlocal! We have three new updates to Local Search Rank Checker. 1. Local Search Rank Checker is now called Local Rank Tracker It’s probably best we tackle this one first so it’s easier for you to follow this launch post! Local Search Rank Checker is a name we chose over 10 years ago, and since then we’ve outgrown it. ‘Checker’ suggests it checks rankings once, or on an ad hoc basis, but that’s not how our customers use it. They use it to track rankings over time so they can measure the impact of their local SEO efforts. This new name makes it easier to understand what the product does and the value it brings. This name change is reflected in the BrightLocal platform, on our website, and in our supporting content. So if you’re looking for guides in the Help C...

Google now allows businesses to display their commitment to environmentalism in their Google Business Profile. Increasing Number Of Customers Value Eco-Consciousness In a survey conducted by Google, 82% of consumers reported sustainability as a top priority when making purchasing decisions. Reflecting this, it has seen “recycling” as one of its most popular searches, with an average popularity score of 81 out of 100. In a report from Google about how it keeps Maps information reliable, the search company reveals it removed seven million fake business profiles in 2021. Additionally, Google prevented tens of millions of fake business profiles from being created, and disabled over a million user accounts belonging to “bad actors.” Verifying the legitimacy of information in Google Business Profiles and Google Maps is increasingly challenging, as the number of contributions continues to rise year over year. Google now receives 20 million contributions every day from people using Maps, such as updated business hours, contact information, photos, and reviews. Since the first days, the TemplateMonster company decided to burn bridges with all Russian partners and services and initiated an informational campaign for citizens of other countries about Ukrainian war. Further, we'd like to reveal the steps we had to make as a fair reaction to the Russian army's massacre on the Ukrainian land. In terms of the marketing campaigns, we've been using some tools to target CIS countries, and now we've disabled: Yandex Direct completely; Google Ads campaigns for Russian clients; RU campaigns in all related accounts. Google Confirms Local Pack Redesign

Google has been testing a new layout for the Local Pack interface over the last few months, and has now announced that the change will be permanent.  The Local Pack is a prominent section of the local search results. It features the top three businesses for a local query, as well as a map pinpointing the location of each. Being featured here can make a huge difference to local business web traffic and sales. Google has typically displayed three results with a map above since 2015. Before then, seven results were listed in the Local Pack without the addition of a map. As some of you may have noticed over the last few months, BrightLocal has undergone some visual upgrades (including the color scheme update that went live in our toolset today). Color plays such an important role across the BrightLocal brand, presenting actionable insights and information, and allowing customers to gain understanding quickly. It’s almost Halloween, so we were all expecting the odd scare, but little could have prepared us for the blood-chilling horror of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg ‘acting’ amazed in front of a green-screened mockup of The Metaverse, during his keynote at the company’s Connect event. Zuckerberg — or The Zuckster, as I imagine he introduces himself when arriving uninvited to your birthday drinks — was in the process of announcing that the company formally known as Facebook would from now on be known simply as Meta. Facebook, the social network, will remain Facebook, but it will be one product among many. Or, as The Zuckster clearly hopes, one among all. With the new name comes a new visual identity, one so bland that I need to go full-on Clockwork Orange just to critique it. Eyes pinned op...

Google Now Shows ‘Ranking Factors Box’ in SERPs to Explain Results

Want to find out why your competitor’s page is No. 1 in Google organic SERPs? Well, now you can! (To the extent that Google is willing to tell you, anyway.) That’s because Google yesterday announced a feature that shows a selection of reasons for ranking individual pages in SERPs, bringing some much-needed transparency to search. via GIPHY Source: Google This feature is a section called ‘Your search & this result’ but it doesn’t have a catchy name yet, so we’re calling it the ‘Ranking Factors Box’, simply because, well, it’s a box that displays ranking factors! The Ranking Factors Box is an extension of the ‘About this result’ box, which is accessible by clicking the ‘three vertical dots’ at the end of a search result and was originally launched back in February of this year. Wher...

Why Piggybacking on Your Brand’s Social Posts is Great for Your Career

Did your boss send you to this blog to try and turn you into an employee advocate? Don’t worry, we’ll make it worth your while. Employee advocacy is when a workforce promotes their organization, most commonly over social media. It’s been known to give companies major benefits, ranging from ad savings and improved brand sentiment to employee retention and increased leads. If your organization has an employee advocacy program, they probably told you to get on board because it’s great for the company—and whatever is great for the company is great for you, etc, etc. But you’re probably still on the fence because, let’s be honest, it’s yet another thing piled on top of your already full plate. What do you get out of sharing company-approved social media posts anyway, right? It turns ou...

Ghost 4.0 Released | Webdesigner Depot Webdesigner Depot » Blog Archive

We’ve been big fans of Ghost since it first launched via a Kickstarter campaign way back in 2013. Ghost 4.0 has just been released, and the host of new features is another giant leap forward for the popular blogging platform. Ghost is a blog-focused CMS, as WordPress is. Unlike WordPress, it’s minimal, fast, and a pleasure to use. To survive in the competitive space, Ghost has niched-down to specializing in monetized content — charging membership for sites to bring in revenue for the site owner (Ghost doesn’t charge any commission on this income). We’ve created this course in collaboration with local SEO specialist Claire Carlile because we realized that while there’s plenty of content out there that helps people learn how to do local SEO, there’s little that helps people get their local SEO agencies off the ground.  Winning that first client is a massive milestone for anyone starting out, but there’s a lot of work needed to get to that point. For the most part, it’s trial and error but early missteps can have negative knock-on effects as your agency grows. For example, you might find yourself in a tricky situation down the line after having underpriced your services at the start, l...
