Here’s What It Was like to Build a Website in the 90s

I’m still fascinated by all aspects of the 1990s. Coming of age during the decade is a big reason why. But there’s more to the story. The 90s were also a golden age for technology as well. The personal computer made its way into the mainstream. And so did the World Wide Web. As such, I started toying with web design during this period. Building a website in those days was undeniably different. The web design industry was nascent – if it existed at all. Standards and best practices were still years away. Web designers had to adapt existing tools for this new medium. We made a lot of mistakes. But that’s OK. The lessons learned in that era have brought us to the present. What was it like to build a website back in the day? Here are a few observations based on my experiences. One obstacle...

Code Snippets That Demonstrate the Repelling Effect in Web Design

Today, we’d like to highlight the repelling effect – a unique trend in web design that’s both repulsive and attractive at the same time. By pushing elements in various directions or blowing them away encourages users to interact with the page and explore its details. Despite its seemingly off-putting behavior, it’s an incredibly engaging feature that can make the user experience more exciting. We’ve curated a collection of inspiring demos complete with code snippets to showcase this trend. These examples will allow you to see firsthand the beauty and intrigue of the repelling effect. Repelling Lines by Daniel Velasquez This first repelling effect example is reminiscent of a set of guitar strings. At first glance, the lines appear static, but as soon as you move your cursor over them, ...

The Web Design Concepts That Were Ahead of Their Time

Hard as it may be to fathom, the web has been a part of our world since CERN placed it into the public domain in 1993. And if you were building or browsing websites during that era, you might not have imagined how much design and functionality would evolve decades later. Using this new and experimental medium, web designers repeatedly innovated and pushed boundaries. There were risks involved – but that’s also what made things fun. It seemed like everybody wanted to play a part in helping the web reach its potential. In reality, most experiments didn’t work out. Some faltered just as quickly as they launched. At the very least, they could be considered good learning experiences for a young industry. Yet there were a few trends, tools, and techniques that were groundbreaking – even if i...

20 Best New Websites, July 2022

Welcome to our guide to the best new websites this month. If subtle, minimal sites are your thing, either look away now or prepare to have your preconceptions challenged because this month, we are going maximalist. Lots of elements fill up the screen, lots of color, lots of big fonts, lots of illustration, and plenty of in-your-face personality. This is a tricky style to get right: if elements are not chosen and placed well, the result is simply annoying clutter. If done well, the result can be impactful and memorable. [And Happy Independence Day to all of our American readers!] screenagers & the incredible machine screenagers & the incredible machine’s site puts illustration front and center, creating a look that evokes various mystic ideas. It sounds strange, but it works.  A...

3 Essential Design Trends, July 2022

There are a lot of dark, retro vibes trending in website design right now. Although there are still some light projects popping up – including a pastel trend below – a lot of what we are seeing has a quite moody feel. Here’s what’s trending in design this month. Pastel Color Palettes Let’s start with the trend with a lighter feel – pastel color palettes. While much of the web is trending toward dark aesthetics, there’s a segment that’s going in the exact opposite direction. Those sites feature soft, pastel color palettes that serve as a balance to all the super dark websites out there. One thing about this website design trend is that it jumps out because of the stark contrast with all of the dark color palettes out there. Each of these designs seems to use a pastel color palette as t...

2020 Web Design Year in Review

A year “like no other” is about to come to a close. 2020 was certainly unique for everyone – web designers included. And it challenged us on several levels. Our daily grind was complicated by shutdowns, kids invading the home office, and clients who needed our help in rapidly changing their business models. Even though many of us were stuck in the house, there was rarely a dull moment. All of that aside, the year saw many developments that had nothing to do with pandemics or other chaos. New tools were brought to market, our favorite software saw important updates and the community was as creative and helpful as ever. In other words: 2020 had plenty of positives for designers and developers to celebrate. Let’s take a look back at some important and interesting developme...
