Attention Spans are Shrinking, but Long-form Content Still Rules — What’s the Catch?

Somewhere in the back of your mind, you probably remember reading at least one article saying that our attention spans are down to a “mere 8 seconds” — or “less than a goldfish”. While it sounds catchy, it’s not that simple. It’s easy to jump to conclusions and get swept up in the clickbaity narrative, but the research on human attention spans isn’t so clear cut.  In fact, some scientific studies seem to point in the completely opposite direction — humans have an enormous capacity for attention.  Our Problem is Not Attention — it’s Distraction  The core issue isn’t a lack of attention — it’s the multitude of distractions competing for our focus. The modern consumer’s attention hasn’t become scarcer, it’s just spread thinner. The growing popularity of platforms such as TikTok...

What’s Going On with Service-area Business Rankings?

Google may have rolled out a local search ranking update around September 7th. Local SEOs in the Local Search Forum are reporting ranking drops for service-area businesses (SABs) on mobile, with some SAB Google Business Profiles suddenly not visible on desktop. These drops in rankings have only been seen in Local Pack results, and not in organic rankings. These changes in rankings seem to have started happening around September 7, suggesting a change in the local algorithm focussed on SABs, on or around this date. Sterling Sky‘s Joy Hawkins has said: “I’m hearing a few cases like this lately and I’m starting to wonder if it’s related to the algorithm updates.” However, she is not able to provide specific advice at this time. As you’ll see below, the whole local SEO community is currently...

Making Money with Open-Source Software: What’s Our Responsibility?

Free, open-source software powers much of the web. And it’s part of what makes the web design industry so unique. Could you imagine a traditional line of work that relies so heavily on no-cost tools? The concept would likely be unfathomable to anyone from an accountant to a zoologist. Yet it’s something web designers have embraced and, to some extent – expect. Whether it’s building a website with WordPress, crafting a layout with Bootstrap, or storing data via MySQL, it’s an everyday occurrence. And these tools are just a few examples. We have a multitude of free options – each helping us do our job more effectively. This has been the case for years. And things have gone remarkably smoothly. Some tools come and go, but the underlying philosophy of open-source software has endured. But that...

What’s the Difference Between Good UI and Good UX?

User Experience (UX) design and User Interface (UI) design are two terms people sometimes mistakenly use interchangeably. While aspects of each are interconnected, there are distinct differences between UI/UX design. According to Internet Live Stats, there are over 1.9 billion websites, but not all are active at the same time. No matter how you slice it, there’s a lot of competition to grab and keep user attention. Good UX is just part of the equation. For a genuinely stellar site, you must also offer an excellent interface. Learning the ins and outs of good UI and UX requires a bit of knowledge of how the two differ and what works. Although they weave in and out of the same design, they are different. What Is the Biggest Difference Between Good UX and UI? UI is the functionality of the de...

Chatbot Vs. Intelligent Virtual Assistant — What’s the difference & Why Care? | by Haptik | May, 2021

Implementing a Conversational AI solution is integral for businesses that want to improve their Customer Experience. With the right strategy, you can engage with customers in human-like conversations while being cost-effective. However, with a plethora of solutions available, most CX and Digital Transformation professionals get confused between ‘chatbots’ and ‘intelligent virtual assistants’.The principal question being — can ‘chatbot’ and ‘Intelligent Virtual Assistant’ be used interchangeably? Or does their scope, complexity, and capabilities vary?Simply put, Intelligent Virtual Assistants (IVA) are evolved chatbot solutions to serve the needs of a modern-day enterprise customer. Chatbots are simple rule-based systems that can only handle simple, routine FAQs. On the other hand, IVAs are...

Apple Maps Ratings: What’s New and What’s Next?

UPDATE: The Apple Maps Ratings update was launched in the USA as part of iOS 14.5 on April 26th, 2021 (some territories had access to it earlier). The update functions exactly as described below, back in October 2020. Sometimes it’s nice when there are no surprises, huh? Originally Published October, 2020 At the end of August 2020, Apple revealed it would be launching its very own ratings solutions within Apple Maps. Talk of “Apple reviews” flew around the Twitterverse and, as usual, there was a lot of conjecture about what this new feature might mean. Apple Maps ratings (yep, that’s right — ratings not reviews, though they may be on the way) has been in beta testing in iOS 14 and will soon roll out globally. The update was first spotted by Twitter user, Beau Giles. Source: 9to5mac Curren...

Transforming what’s possible in Media & Entertainment with AI | by PopcornApps

Artificial Intelligence has gone from the pages of science fiction to “all around you” like Dolby Surround Sound rather menacingly informs you at the start of every movie. Conversations that might have sounded ridiculous even five or ten years ago are commonplace now. The days of associating AI with humanoid Asimov-type robots are over: from healthcare to shopping to finance, AI is everywhere.Conversational AI has quietly changed the game for customer service and what companies can achieve with digital interfaces. Chatbots are ubiquitous — in banking, online shopping, food delivery — but we don’t necessarily register their presence. The idea, after all, with these intelligent robotic helpers, is that they should make the experience as natural as possible. With advancements in Machine Learn...
