Google Local Search Research Paper On Business Type Extraction

Google published a research paper describing how it extracts “services offered” information from local business sites to add it to business profiles in Google Maps and Search. The algorithm describes specific relevance factors and confirms that the system has been successfully in use for a year. What makes this research paper especially notable is that one of the authors is Marc Najork, a distinguished research scientist at Google who is associated with many milestones in information retrieval, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence. The purpose of this system is to make it easier for users to find local businesses that provide the services they are looking for. The paper was published in 2024 (according to the Internet Archive) and is dated 2023. The research paper expla...

User Research is Storytelling

Ever since I was a boy, I’ve been fascinated with movies. I loved the characters and the excitement—but most of all the stories. I wanted to be an actor. And I believed that I’d get to do the things that Indiana Jones did and go on exciting adventures. I even dreamed up ideas for movies that my friends and I could make and star in. But they never went any further. I did, however, end up working in user experience (UX). Now, I realize that there’s an element of theater to UX—I hadn’t really considered it before, but user research is storytelling. And to get the most out of user research, you need to tell a good story where you bring stakeholders—the product team and decision makers—along and get them interested in learning more. Local SEO Keyword Research Doggie Door: How and Why to Search Google Maps Reviews by Keyword

Like my post? Please share! Here’s the doggie door, which I’ll explain more in a minute: 1. Go to the Google Maps tab OR open up the Google Maps app and pull up any business. You must go either to maps.google.com or open the app, because this won’t work anywhere else, like in the Google Business Profile “dashboard,” in the Chrome app, etc. 2. Click on the “reviews” tab, as though you’re a customer who wants to browse them.  (Of course, I’m assuming that the business has reviews.) 3. Click on the magnifying glass icon, type any word or brief phrase into the search bar that pops up, and check out the list of all reviews containing that word or phrase.  The word or phrase will show up in bold lettering. Here’s where the keyword-search feature is in the Google Maps app: Handy, isn’t it? No...

You know a better understanding of user needs would help the team get clear on what you are actually trying to accomplish, but time and budget for research is tight. Chatbot personality traits and their effect on user satisfaction amongst Gen Z: A research and hotel case study | by Gabriëlle Rasmioen | Aug, 2021

I remember when I used a chatbot for the first time. It was the chatbot of Dutch shipping company, Post NL. My package still hadn’t arrived 3 days after its expected delivery date. Slightly annoyed and unable to immediately talk to a real company representative, I got in touch with chatbot Daan. Unfortunately, chatbot Daan did not comprehend my questions, lacked personality, and was unable to redirect me to a real human. All this resulted in me leaving the conversation more frustrated than I was to begin with. This unsuccessful encounter led me to choose the topic of chatbots as inspiration for my thesis research on artificial intelligence. More specifically, I wanted to dive into the effect of personality within customer service chatbots on Gen Z’s user satisfaction. Why Gen Z you might be ...
