TikTok Faces New Legal Challenge Over its Tracking of Underage User Data

Despite facing an array of challenges - which, at times, threatened the app's very existence - TikTok has continued to grow in 2020, and looks set to become an even more important, and influential platform in the year ahead. But while TikTok has seemingly avoided a ban in the US (for now), the app remains under scrutiny, due to concerns about its impact on young users, and international data security considerations, given its Chinese ownership.  On the first point, TikTok is set to once again be examined over the ways in which it tracks and uses data from underage users as part of newly launched legal proceedings in the UK.  As per Sky News UK: "A 12-year-old girl from London, who cannot be identified, plans to bring a damages claim against six firms said to be responsible for TikTok and...

Google Adds Short-Form Video Carousel in Selected Search Results

This is interesting, and could, potentially, have implications for your 2021 content approach. This week, Google has begun testing a new carousel of short-form video results for selected queries, providing direct links to relevant TikTok and Instagram Reels video clips. The move aligns with the rising popularity of short-form video content, enabling Google to tap into that trend, while also maintaining the relevance of its search results. And there's a key element to Google's lean-in to short clips. As noted by TechCrunch: "Both Instagram and TikTok videos were available in the Short Videos row. When clicked, you’re taken to the web version of the social platform - not the native mobile app, even if it’s installed on your device. The end result is that Google users are more likely to re...

5 Creative Ways Brands Are Using Influencers

Most people tend to associate influencers with social media. However, influencers have been around for a lot longer than most people might think and can be dated as far back as the middle ages with royalty, popes, knights, earls, and artists.  In recent years, influencers have exploded in popularity on social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Snap, Pinterest, and TikTok. This has resulted in the emergence of 4 distinct influencer types: nano, micro, macro, and celebrity influencers. Image courtesy of Tribe Brands, both large and small are tapping into the influencer space at an ever-increasing rate. That’s why it may not come as a surprise to hear that the market has been forecasted to be worth more than $15 billion by 2022. Here’s a fresh look at some creative ways brand...

7 Key Tips For Optimizing Your Email Marketing Ahead of Holiday Season

It’s that time of year again. As the holiday season fast approaches, the nights are beginning to draw in, the temperature is beginning to drop, and marketers are hard at work figuring out a winning strategy to entice customers into their sales funnels.  The winter period is an extremely busy period for online marketers as businesses ramp up their efforts to appeal to buyers in the run-up to Christmas.  (Image: Clicky Blog) In fact, in the US, the busiest five days in the calendar year for email marketers all fall between Thanksgiving Day and mid-December. That’s a hectic schedule, so it’s vital that a plan is in place to make the most of your email marketing efforts.  Although marketing has evolved at a rapid pace in the 21st Century, email marketing has proven itself time and time again ...

Email Marketing vs. Social Media: Which is Better?

By Kelly Forst December 2, 2020 TLDR: Instead of focusing on which is better, learn how to combine the power of email and social media for a powerful marketing strategy. Email marketing vs. social media. “Email marketing is dead.” “That social channel is old news.” How many times have you heard phrases like this, pitting tried and true marketing channels against each other like gladiators gone to war? I know my answer: too many to count.  So called ‘experts’ have a bad habit of killing off marketing channels that have been around a while in favor of the ‘latest and greatest’ tactics and tools.  But there’s a reason those older channels have been around so long. They work.  This was the narrative that came on the scene when social media was just gaini...

Facebook Faces Renewed Backlash Over Lack of Support for Small Advertisers

This seems like the most logical way for Facebook to close out 2020. Last week, reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong shared images of a new look Facebook Help Center, with updated controls tools to help users find the answers they need. The update was later confirmed by Facebook - as explained by Facebook's Alexandru Voica: "We redesigned the Help Center to help people find the information they're looking for faster, with an improved and streamlined navigation and a user experience that's consistent with the rest of Facebook.com. We've also made search easier to use and refreshed the most popular topics to reflect what people want to learn about today." YouTube Adds New ‘Shorts’ Shortcut Button to User Home Screens in India

YouTube is testing a new shortcut option for its TikTok-like 'Shorts' feed, as it seeks to establish the option in the Indian market.  As you can see in this screenshot, posted by Digital Information World, the new home screen link gives Shorts prominent space in the top bar of the app, making it easier to tap through and see the latest in a dedicated Shorts feed. As explained by YouTube:  "We’ll be adding a Shorts icon to the top or bottom row of the mobile app that makes it easier for you to tap and watch Shorts on YouTube. Those who are in the experiment will either see a Shorts icon in place of the Explore tab (with the Explore icon moved to the top row) or will see a Shorts icon in place of the Cast icon in the top row (casting can still be done in the player while watching a video)....

Snapchat Offers Tentative Support for UK MP’s Call for Labels on Digitally Altered Images

Negative self comparison is one of the biggest risks for young people online, and the availability of advanced photo editing and image-altering tools now means that many of the photos of people you see posted are not realistic depictions of what they actually look like. That can have serious impacts, and recently, a UK MP called for direct action to address it. Back in September, Tory MP Dr. Luke Evans proposed a new law which would force social platforms to add labels to any posted image that had been digitally altered or enhanced. Evans said that such enhancements create an "unrealistic and unachievable aspiration" for young people, which can cause significant psychological impacts. "With the click of a mouse you can have bigger biceps, with the swipe of a thumb you can have a slimmer wa...
