Lessons Learned in 25 Years of Freelancing

Embarking on a freelance web design career means embracing uncertainty. You’ll have to book enough gigs to keep you financially afloat. You’ll also need to weather the ups and downs. Most importantly, you’ll have to adjust to a changing landscape. Nothing is guaranteed. Thus, I was astonished and amused when the calendar flipped to 2024. This year marks the 25th anniversary of my freelance business. How time flies. I had no such milestones in mind back in 1999. My goals were relatively simple. I wanted to apply what I’d learned working for others. And I wanted to do things my way. Longevity wasn’t a priority for that 21-year-old kid. Maybe I’ve beaten the odds. But I’m still working with clients. Some have even been with me for the entire run. My goal today is to share some valuable lesson...

Facebook Continues to Add Users After 20 Years of Existence

Despite ongoing predictions of its demise, and countless straight up declarations of the same, Facebook is still going strong, and still adding users, despite the app now having been with us for 20 years. Yes, this week marks the 20th anniversary of “The Facebook”, Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard side project, which went on to become a global powerhouse, which is now used by almost half of all people on the planet. Indeed, as of last count, Facebook now has over 3 billion monthly active users. To put that in perspective, the population of the entire world is around 8 billion, and with 1.4 billion people in China, where Meta’s apps are not available, and around 25% of the global population aged under 15 (you have to be 13 years old to sign up for Facebook), that suggests that the majority of peo...

SEO Experience: Lessons Learned from 9 Years in the Industry

It’s been 9 years since I started Local SEO Search. At that time, small businesses were no longer getting good results from traditional advertising, and everyone was trying to figure out how to reach customers in a digital world. I remember spending hours upon hours reading articles and experimenting with different techniques. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about SEO – both from my own experiences and from the success we’ve created for our clients. In this blog post, I’d like to share some of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years. Digital Marketing is Always Changing Anyone who works in SEO knows that the landscape is always changing. What worked last year may not work this year, and what works today may be obsolete tomorrow. This can be frustrating for businesses tha...

Google Confirms Biggest Local Search Algorithm Update in Five Years

Many local businesses have noticed huge fluctuations in their local search rankings over the last few weeks, with Google now confirming an important update to the local algorithm.  Rolling out between November 30th and December 8th, this update has been named ‘Vicinity’ by Sterling Sky. This is the largest change to the local algorithm since Possum in 2016 and has caused widespread ranking disruption. Google confirmed the update in a tweet on December 16th: Our November 2021 local search update has concluded. It began Nov 30 and ran through Dec 8. It involved a rebalancing of various factors we consider in generating local search results. General guidance for businesses remains the same as covered here: https://t.co/uyXFfmUEIR — Google Search Central (@googlesearchc) December 16, 2021 Wh...

How to Influence “Years in Business” in the Local Pack Results

Posted Jun 28, 2021 by Joy Hawkins In this Guide: Why you should add an opening date Earlier this year, Google started to display opening dates in the local pack results.  If you choose to not add your opening date inside Google My Business (GMB), Google will often pick a date based on other sources – and these sources could easily be wrong.  I recently did an audit for a business that was displaying as being open for 7 years, when in reality they have been open for 23 years!  Since Google actually allows you to control this, there is no reason why you wouldn’t want to fill it out.  In the example below, what would you be more likely to choose – the business that has been open for 3 years, the on...

10 Years of Local Search Blogging

Like my post? Please share! Today marks 10 years since I started blogging about local SEO and related topics, and in my view it marks the real start of my business and all that’s brought – including 400+ posts, way more skill, great clients, a great living, some friendships, a better understanding of my place on this dustball, and a bit of fun along the way. Therefore, as Klingon ritual dictates, I must offer up a few stray thoughts today, even if there is an 80% chance it’s all irrelevant to you and a complete waste of your time.  On the other hand, if you’re a business owner who’s interested in the blogging or “content” thing, or if you’re a longtime reader here, or if you’re a local SEO-er, there may be bits and pieces of interest to you. As I alluded to in my post from 5 years ago, I h...

Snapchat Shares New insights into Christmas and New Year’s Trends

Looking to make that last-minute push for your Christmas campaigns, or planning your marketing approach ahead of what will be a very different New Year's celebration? This week, Snapchat has provided some new insight into how its users are approaching the holiday season, which could have some bearing on how marketers angle their campaigns for such. First off, on Christmas trends - Snapchat says that the majority of its users are planning to celebrate with family, however they can, with holiday movies and outdoor activities high on the list. That's in line with general holiday trends, but it is worth noting that more people will be taking part in smaller, more intimate gatherings this year, which could place more emphasis on these activities than in times past. Snapchat also notes that more...
