Google Discover Core Update Data: Local Publishers Lost Reach

An analysis from Discover tracking tool DiscoverSnoop adds to the post-update data available on Google’s Discover core update, confirming some patterns identified in earlier NewzDash analysis while contradicting others. The DiscoverSnoop report compared article counts and audience scores for publishers in the week before the update began (January 26 to February 1) against the week after it completed (March 2 to March 8). That post-completion window differs from NewzDash’s earlier scorecard, which measured a mid-rollout window. For transparency, DiscoverSnoop is a commercial Discover analytics platform. The report is based on its own tracking data. Who Lost Visibility Some publishers lost more than 20% of their article placements in the Discover feed while also seeing audience scores declin...

Google Business Profile Update Targets Delivery Of Age-Restricted Products

Google has updated its Business Profile rules for service-area businesses that sell age-restricted products. Now, businesses selling alcohol, cannabis, weapons, and similar items must have a physical storefront to maintain their Google Business Profile. We were alerted to this update by Stefan Somborac on X: Google actually uses the phrase "Businesses associated with…" not "Businesses selling…", which significantly broadens how this new change can be applied. 2/3 pic.twitter.com/FD31fUmm94 — Stefan Somborac (@StefanSomborac) November 27, 2024 Changes To Service-Area Business Guidelines Google has updated its guidelines to prevent businesses that sell age-restricted products from operating only as service-area businesses. The updated guidelines state: “Businesses associated with products ...

The Helpful Content Update – BrightLocal

Just over a month ago, on August 18, 2022, Google announced an update to their algorithm that got people both fearful and excited. The update itself started rolling out a week later on August 25, and Google confirmed it was going to take a couple of weeks before people saw an impact. This change to the algorithm was named the Helpful Content Update (HCU). And, for the first time in a while, SEOs around the world thought they were going to see some seismic activity in the search engine results pages (SERPs), rather than small blips. Then, right after the rollout for the HCU had finished, they dropped another update on us. This update was the September 2022 Core Algorithm Update. So what actually happened? Where are we a few weeks down the line? Did people see their sites plummeting into obs...

How to connect, update, and troubleshoot your Google Home Wi-Fi network | by Tapaan Chauhan

Your Google Home or Google Assistant speaker listens intently to your every word to deliver music requests, smart home control, and answers to questions — but only if it’s connected to the internet. This connection should be formed during the first setup of your Google Nest Mini, Nest Audio, or Nest Hub, however, if you’re changing Wi-Fi networks or reconnecting after the initial setup, you’ll need to go through the menus of the Google Home app. However, as long as you’re trying to connect your speaker to the same network as your phone or tablet, this should be rather simple. When completing the instructions below, have your Wi-Fi password and name handy. You’ll be asked to link your speaker to a Wi-Fi network during setup, but you can always go into the settings menu of each item and connect...

Google Confirms Biggest Local Search Algorithm Update in Five Years

Many local businesses have noticed huge fluctuations in their local search rankings over the last few weeks, with Google now confirming an important update to the local algorithm.  Rolling out between November 30th and December 8th, this update has been named ‘Vicinity’ by Sterling Sky. This is the largest change to the local algorithm since Possum in 2016 and has caused widespread ranking disruption. Google confirmed the update in a tweet on December 16th: Our November 2021 local search update has concluded. It began Nov 30 and ran through Dec 8. It involved a rebalancing of various factors we consider in generating local search results. General guidance for businesses remains the same as covered here: https://t.co/uyXFfmUEIR — Google Search Central (@googlesearchc) December 16, 2021 Wh...

Building the BrightLocal Brand: The Color Scheme Update

As some of you may have noticed over the last few months, BrightLocal has undergone some visual upgrades (including the color scheme update that went live in our toolset today). These surface changes are more than just about looking good—they are the result of a year-long project looking into how we could improve our brand to enhance user experience. As part of the project, we looked at many aspects of our brand (more on those below), including color. Color plays such an important role across the BrightLocal brand, presenting actionable insights and information, and allowing customers to gain understanding quickly. Looking at the BrightLocal palette, it was immediately apparent that information was sometimes hard to read. When we also discovered that 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women suffer f...

How Marketers are Staying Up-to-Date in the Era of the iOS 14 Update

Ever since Apple CEO Tim Cook officially announced the new privacy features included with the iOS 14 update in December of 2020, the marketing world has been plotting our adjustments and strategies for operating under these new guidelines. We had time to prepare, and we did. But now iOS 14 is active, so we get to observe real-life examples of how familiar brands are evolving under the iOS 14 update marketing impact.  Just a quick refresher on iOS 14 developments: Apple announced a new privacy initiative last year that gives users the option to opt-out of IDFAs. IDFAs (Identifiers For Advertisers) are third-party trackers that report data about user activity back to the advertisers. The operative effect of this change is a much smaller population of iOS users who will be susceptible to t...

Core Web Vitals and the Page Experience Update: What They Mean for Local Businesses

Google is currently putting together the final changes for a search algorithm update that they’ve announced will land in May 2021.  The update is being called the Page Experience update because of its focus on usability rather than things like keywords or search relevance. Google has already provided some information on the update, which aims to measure and potentially rank the experience that a user encounters when visiting a page. The fact that Google have given so much warning about the update says all you need to know about how seriously to take it. We know it’ll impact organic search results but as of yet, there’s no word on whether there will be any specific impact on Google My Business rankings. Although this update is due to hit the algorithm in May, there’s no reason not to get ah...

“Pretty much everything goes through chaos, but in chaos there’s opportunity.” That’s how Scott Desgrosseilliers, founder of Wicked Reports, sees the upcoming iOS 14 update. Things will change as Apple starts to ask users if they want their data tracked by apps—and marketers have to learn to be okay with that. Yet, we’re a savvy bunch. We know just because changes are on the horizon, that doesn’t mean it’s the end. We’ve lived through platform shifts, algorithm changes and have already questioned whether we need to make a dancing TikTok video to be relevant. Bring on the changes. With Scott’s help, we’re going to show you the 5 things to do right now to help your business survive the iOS 14 update. First, let’s talk about what the update means for iOS users. Here’s What the ...
