UX Hierarchy: How Users Actually Scan Pages in 2026

The year 2026 has ushered in a behavioral revolution in web design. For decades, designers relied on the reliable F-pattern and Z-pattern, which were essentially static maps of where eyes fell on a fixed screen. As we navigate a landscape dominated by agentic interfaces and spatial computing, the way users scan a page has fundamentally fractured. We no longer design for a viewer; we design for a scanner-interactor who expects the interface to meet them halfway. The Death of the Static ScanIn the early 2020s, eye-tracking studies were simple. Researchers put a user in front of a monitor and watched their gaze. Today, the page is no longer a flat document.Users in 2026 do not just scan from top to bottom; they scan for anchors of intent. With the rise of AI-driven browsing, users often arrive a...

Google Maps Lets Users Post Reviews With Nicknames

Google Maps now lets users leave business reviews under a custom nickname instead of their real name. The feature is part of a four-feature Maps update and is rolling out globally on Android, iOS, and desktop. Local SEO agency Whitespark was among the first to document the change in detail, describing it as one of the more notable shifts to Google’s review system in years. What Changed Google’s support documentation outlines the new setting. Users can enable a custom display name and picture for posting through their Maps or Google profile. Once enabled, that identity appears on reviews, photos, videos, and Q&A posts across Maps. The feature works retroactively. If you edit your nickname later, past contributions update to show the new name. Whitespark notes that people have long creat...

Elon Musk Says Users With a Lot of Verified Followers Will Get Free Checkmarks

A lot of people with big followings are about to get their X (formerly Twitter) checkmarks back, whether they want them or not. It seems that X owner Elon Musk is trying yet another angle to boost X subscriptions, this time by giving them away to users with high follower counts in the app. Going forward, all ???? accounts with over 2500 verified subscriber followers will get Premium features for free and accounts with over 5000 will get Premium+ for free— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 28, 2024 Well, high verified follower counts that is. As outlined by Musk, users with over 2,500 paying users following them will now get X Premium for free, while those with 5,000 blue tick accounts among their audience will get X Premium+ for free. Why? Well, presumably Musk believes that more people wil...

Facebook Continues to Add Users After 20 Years of Existence

Despite ongoing predictions of its demise, and countless straight up declarations of the same, Facebook is still going strong, and still adding users, despite the app now having been with us for 20 years. Yes, this week marks the 20th anniversary of “The Facebook”, Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard side project, which went on to become a global powerhouse, which is now used by almost half of all people on the planet. Indeed, as of last count, Facebook now has over 3 billion monthly active users. To put that in perspective, the population of the entire world is around 8 billion, and with 1.4 billion people in China, where Meta’s apps are not available, and around 25% of the global population aged under 15 (you have to be 13 years old to sign up for Facebook), that suggests that the majority of peo...

The Dangers of Deceptive Design Patterns (And…

Today As web designers, our role in crafting user-friendly digital landscapes is critical. We are tasked with creating user experiences that make visitors feel comfortable and respected. This, in turn, creates benefits for our clients by improving repeat visits and achieves the site’s ultimate aims, whether that is sales revenue or some less tangible form of metric. Yet the rise of UX dark patterns, or deceptive patterns as they are more often referred to, poses a significant challenge to maintaining an ethical and user-centric approach in the industry. These tactics breach trust as they are designed to lead users into making unintended decisi...

Meta Shares ‘Threads Dictionary’ to Keep Users Up to Speed on the Latest App Lingo

So is a post on Threads called a ‘Thread’ or a ‘post’? And what about re-posts – are they ‘re-threads’? It’s all a bit up in the air at the moment, in the (very) early days of the new Twitter-esque app, but to help you with the latest lingo, the Threads team has shared a ‘Threads Dictionary’ to keep you up to speed. So, to clarify: Each discussion is called a thread – so you post a thread in the app A post is an individual element within a thread (though some people are also referring to this as ‘threading’ or ‘stitching’) A shared thread is called a repost – not a ‘re-thread’ or some other variation Sharing someone else’s post is a quote thread It’s all pretty straightforward, there’s no new language to learn, as such. But there is going to be some discussion around what the actual act o...

Unlocking the Power of Design to Help Users Make…

UX, from a decision-making perspective, means focusing on a user’s context and individual needs. How does the immediate decision fit into the user’s broader goals? What is influencing their decision? Do they have enough information to make an informed decision they won’t regret? Decision-making can be complex, and it’s made all the more problematic when users don’t have enough information to make a decision. UX designers can address this by communicating all options and potential outcomes and providing visual cues to make decision-making more intuitive. Tip 1: Structure Decisions Around The User’s Needs A decision structure is a framework within which a user can make a choice. For example, should they keep exploring a site or abandon it? A good decision structure is transparent (meaning t...

Reddit Tests ‘Mod Notes’ to Provide More Insight on Users and Their Contributions in Communities

Reddit has launched an interesting experiment which essentially provides advice and ratings on contributors to subreddits, enabling more context as to how the user has contributed in the past. As you can see in this example, Reddit has launched a new test of what it’s calling ‘Mod Notes’, which enables moderators to create informational notes and tips that are then attached to a user profile for that community. Here’s another look at the Mod Notes process, which also includes a full log of notes and mod actions applied to a user within a specific subreddit.  As explained by Reddit: “The profile hovercard will be your home base for accessing Mod Notes and any moderator with Manage User permissions will be able to utilize it.” So it’s not intended to be a public-facing info source, as such...

Facebook Warns EU Users of Impacts to Messaging Due to Changes in Privacy Laws

Facebook has outlined the latest messaging changes for European users as a result of new data security and privacy laws in the region. Europe's Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive - also known as the 'ePrivacy Directive' - is being expanded from this week in order to incorporate more forms of digital communication. The Directive relates to how user data is stored and used, and how businesses can use platforms, including messaging tools, to distribute marketing material. The latest changes relate to how long data can be kept, and what types of information can be gathered via messaging apps. Facebook outlined coming changes to Messenger API usage for European businesses earlier in the month, and now, it's looking at the consumer side, and how everyday users will be impacted. As e...
