Instagram Adds New ‘People You Follow’ Filter for DMs

Instagram has added a new DM filter option for creators, which will enable you to filter your inbox to only messages from profiles that you follow in the app. As you can see in this example, the new “People you follow” option will enable you to prioritize DMs from only the profiles that you’ve chosen to follow, which could make it easier to prioritize personal connection. As explained by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri: “We’re adding a filter for people you follow because maybe you DM a lot of people you don’t follow yet, negotiating deals, figuring out collaborations. But sometimes you just want to focus the experience on people you know, in order to make the experience a bit safer and more positive.” So for people who get a lot of I...

Twitter Adds New Video Playback Speed Controls, Flags Coming Video Updates

Twitter added new playback speed controls for videos in the app, another step in its video development roadmap which looks set to become an even bigger focus under incoming CEO Linda Yaccarino. Twitter’s already added longer video uploads for Blue subscribers, along with enhanced playback quality options. Now it’s also added playback speed controls to give users more control over how they manage their in-app video experience. As you can see in this example, posted by Musk’s friend and (seeming) advisor Jason Calacanis, you now have a range of playback speed options to choose from via the video player in app. For longer videos, that’s more important, especially with discussions and other clips that you may want to consume at a faster speed, while slower speed playback could be great ...

LinkedIn Looks to Improve Messaging Interactions with ‘Focused Inbox’, Adds New Sales Analytics Tools

LinkedIn’s looking to help members better manage their LinkedIn inbox, by filtering out more of the junk, with a new ‘Focused Inbox’ UI, which will essentially re-route less valuable messages into an ‘Other’ tab in your LinkedIn message stream. As you can see in this example, LinkedIn’s Focused Inbox update will now provide you with two separate InMail tabs – ‘Focused’ and ‘Other’. Though ‘Other’ could just as easily be labeled ‘Spam’ – and it’ll also be interesting to see where LinkedIn’s Sponsored InMails end up in this separation. Like, a lot of those are junk too, but I’m guessing that LinkedIn’s not going to shift them over to the ‘You Can Ignore These Messages’ section if brands are paying to promote them. As explained by LinkedIn: “[The Focused Inbox] is an intelligent, dual-...

LinkedIn Adds New Templates for Posts to Facilitate More Creative Updates

LinkedIn continues to add new ways to help creators maximize engagement in the app, this time via a new templates option for posts, which provides a range of text formatting and background options for your LinkedIn updates. As you can see in this sequence, you can now tap on the new ‘Use a Template’ option in the post creation flow, which will provide you with a range of options to customize your post. As explained by LinkedIn: “Choose from dozens of customizable backgrounds and fonts, add your own text, and hit “Share”. You can even add a clickable link onto templates to encourage your audience to take action.” Which is in reference to LinkedIn’s recently added link sticker tool, another option to add a different angle to your LinkedIn updates. It’s an interesting addition, which ...

YouTube Adds Option to Reuse Details from Previous Videos to Streamline Uploads, New Mobile Analytics

This could come in handy - YouTube has today added a new option in YouTube Studio which enables users to re-use details from previous uploads for new uploads within the posting process on desktop. As you can see here, the new option enables you to re-use: Video title Video description Language settings Shorts sampling permissions Category selections That could save you a lot of time, particularly for those who regularly post on the same topics, or have to manually input language options with each new post. Of course, you’re probably not going to upload many videos with the exact same title and description, but by copying the details across, that could make it easier to edit those details quickly, for similar content, without having to re-enter the same info for each video in a serie...

How Illustration Adds Emotion To UX

From 45,000-year-old cave paintings to 21st-century space rocket diagrams, illustrations have long played a significant role in human communication. Pictures cross-language and literacy barriers, allowing people to understand and communicate complex moods and feelings that they cannot in words. When we were little, we could understand and appreciate E.H. Shepard’s illustrations of Winnie the Pooh and friends long before we could read A.A. Milne’s words. The word ‘to illustrate’ has two main meanings: to create a picture of; and to demonstrate or provide an example of. In the context of the web, illustration is part decoration, part emotional signal, helping to create a particular impression to the user by painting a metaphorical picture. Why Use Illustrations on a Website? Illustratio...

WhatsApp Adds Option to Speed Up Voice Message Playback

Here's a quick one, which could come in handy for those who communicate via voice messages - and in particular, long voice messages. Today, WhatsApp has added new variable playback speed control options for audio replies. It's pretty straightforward - now, when you get a voice message, you can play it regular 1x speed, or you lean slightly more towards Chipmunk-style voices by cranking the playback to 1.5x, or even 2.0x regular speed. Which, as many have noted, alternative messaging app Telegram has actually enabled its users to do since 2018.  Telegram, and another messaging app, Signal, have both gained traction over the past few months due to WhatsApp's controversial privacy policy update, which will enable it to share some data from user transactions with businesses in WhatsApp a...

Twitter Adds Spaces Access via the Web as it Continues to Develop its Audio Social Platform

Twitter has taken another steady leap forward in the evolving audio social sphere by adding Spaces access via the web, meaning that you can now tune into Twitter Spaces from your desktop PC. It's not perfect as yet. I tried to tune into a couple of Spaces and got as far as this screen, which remained stagnant for as long as I waited. But early teething problems aside, the ability to access Spaces on the web is a significant advance, as it not only opens up the option to even more users, but it also enables hosts and speakers to use their PC microphones and audio set-ups, which will lend itself to more professional sounding, higher quality Spaces streams. As you can see in the image above, when you go to join a Space on your PC, you'll first get a preview of the Space, similar to th...

Star Wars: Squadron has introduced a new mod for its players. It now supports voice command through HCS voice-packs. This new mod has added a new life to this video game. Moreover, among the three voices available, one of the voices is of Michael Dorn, better known as the Klingon Worf from the Star Trek: The Next Generation show and films. The three voices, each costing around $13, fill in as the co-pilot for the player. While the game is on, the player can arrange the AI to alter focus on, deal with the motor frameworks of the ship, and request them to shoot their weapons, in any event, indicating which weapon to discharge by mentioning to the AI what the loadout for the ship is before starting the following level. Star Wars isn’t the main game that HCS Voicepacks has made voices for. A...

Google Adds Short-Form Video Carousel in Selected Search Results

This is interesting, and could, potentially, have implications for your 2021 content approach. This week, Google has begun testing a new carousel of short-form video results for selected queries, providing direct links to relevant TikTok and Instagram Reels video clips. The move aligns with the rising popularity of short-form video content, enabling Google to tap into that trend, while also maintaining the relevance of its search results. And there's a key element to Google's lean-in to short clips. As noted by TechCrunch: "Both Instagram and TikTok videos were available in the Short Videos row. When clicked, you’re taken to the web version of the social platform - not the native mobile app, even if it’s installed on your device. The end result is that Google users are more likely t...
