Can You Hide Your GBP/GMB Address Without Losing Your Local Rankings?

How can a service area business (SAB) move their address and not lose their rankings? Well, it’s tricky. I just tested this in a new case study, and I thought I had come up with a brilliant solution, but it didn’t quite work out as well as I had hoped. But fear not. I think there is a solution, and I’m going to break it down in this video. Some Context I posted a tweet about how service areas don’t have any impact on rankings. And Trey Copeland, a service area business owner, replied with the following: This is a great example demonstrating that service areas have no impact on ranking. And it also demonstrates a common problem with Google Business Profiles: Where when a service area business moves their location, it’s very difficult to shift their rankings from the ...

Why businesses need a professional email address

By Liz Willits October 11, 2023 When I started my own business, I jotted down a list of administrative and setup tasks that I needed to complete right away.  One of the first tasks I tackled: Getting a professional email address. I didn’t want to send from a free email address — an amateurish move. Which is why I prioritized setting up my professional address.  If you run a side hustle, business, or nonprofit, I also recommend that you send emails from a professional email address. They come with many perks. They boost credibility, trust, and brand recognition. And they can also improve email deliverability and subscriber engagement.  But how exactly?  In this blog post, I’ll explain everything you need to know about professional email addresses. You’ll learn: ...

How to Rank in Cities Where you Don’t Have an Address

Targeting local organic results for areas you serve outside of your current location requires creating well thought out and planned city landing pages. If you invest time and energy into building an awesome, informative, and relevant page, then you have the chance to earn solid traffic and drive leads without having to open a physical location in these cities. The city page strategy is nothing new, however, it is often overlooked, or is executed poorly by some businesses (and consultants), which can lead to underwhelming results. In light of this we’ve decided to put together a list of ways to help you improve and create awesome city pages. What you need to know about city pages A city page is similar to any other location landing page, except that they don’t have a physical business addre...

How To Get a User’s IP Address With PHP

In PHP, there are several methods to retrieve a user’s IP address. We will explore two of those ways in this article. DOWNLOAD NOW   The most reliable way to get a user’s IP address in PHP is to use the $_SERVER superglobal variable. The $_SERVER superglobal variable contains information about the server environment, including the user’s IP address. Here’s an example: <?php $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; echo $ip; ?> The $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] element returns the IP address of the client (i.e., the user’s device) that is making the request to the server. This method works well for most cases, but there are a f...

Bug Messing with Service-Area Google Business Profiles: Page Removed But Reinstated Once Address Is Shown Publicly

Like my post? Please share! This story should interest you if you’ve got a service-area business and noticed anything strange with your Google Business Profile page, if you suddenly can’t find your page when you search for it, or if you’re weighing the pros and cons of hiding or showing your address, or if you just like to learn about GBP / GMB bugs before they bite. Greg McBrien of Wolf Web Co. in NSW, Australia, told me about a strange situation one of his clients had just run into. The problem is odd: a Google Business Profile with a hidden address stops showing on the map, but isn’t suspended, as in the admins are still verified and not booted out and forced to re-verify.  The temporary (possibly longer-term) solution is odder: showing the address publicly, even though technically that...

How to Include a Physical Address in Your Emails Without Revealing Where You Live

By Pam Neely May 24, 2022 CAN-SPAM law requires all commercial emails include the sender’s physical address. But that doesn’t mean you have to include your home address. Adding your business’s — or your own — physical address to all your emails is a required step when you set up your first email campaign. It makes some people a little nervous. “What if someone comes to my house?”  Fortunately, there are ways to meet this requirement without revealing where you live or risking a fine. But first, let’s explain why you have to include that physical address. CAN-SPAM law and physical email address Everybody hates spam emails. (Especially us!) And adding a physical address to your emails is one of the best ways to stop spammers and reduce how many unwanted emails we ...

Barack Obama Outlines Key Challenges with Social Media Amplification, and How to Address ‘Design Flaws’ to Save Democracy

Former US President Barack Obama has outlined a range of rising concerns with the modern media landscape, and social media specifically, along with potential solutions that could help to address social platform ‘design flaws’ that are facilitating the spread of toxic content and misinformation online. In a broad-ranging speech on the topic of “Challenges to Democracy in the Digital Information Realm”, the former President has highlighted a raft of concerns with the rise of social media platforms, and the impact that they’ve had on discourse more broadly. As per Obama: “I’m convinced that right now, one of the biggest impediments to [improving society], indeed one of the biggest reasons for democracy’s weakening, is the profound change that’s taken place in how we communicate and consume ...

Shoehorning Cities into the Address Field of a Google My Business Page

Like my post? Please share! I may have seen this before, but it must not have registered with me until I saw it more than once on the same page of Google Maps results.   In any event, it’s new to me.  Below is an example.  Do you see what’s out of place? Is it the plump business name?  Nope.  Keyword-stuffing like that is omnipresent.  What else looks odd? That “service area” – Holy Moses!  Has Google started displaying in Google Maps all the cities in your GMB service area?  That’s what I thought at first, but notice: the cities are in the “address” field. The street address is in the address field, but so are 12 cities (known as “suburbs” in Australia) and communities the business serves. That isn’t a fluke, because on the very same page of Google Maps results is another GMB page with...
