User Research is Storytelling

Ever since I was a boy, I’ve been fascinated with movies. I loved the characters and the excitement—but most of all the stories. I wanted to be an actor. And I believed that I’d get to do the things that Indiana Jones did and go on exciting adventures. I even dreamed up ideas for movies that my friends and I could make and star in. But they never went any further. I did, however, end up working in user experience (UX). Now, I realize that there’s an element of theater to UX—I hadn’t really considered it before, but user research is storytelling. And to get the most out of user research, you need to tell a good story where you bring stakeholders—the product team and decision makers—along and get them interested in learning more. Storytelling: The Secret Sauce to Making More Sales With Email Marketing

Compelling Brand Storytelling for Marketers

In recent years, it's become fashionable for marketers to describe themselves as "storytellers" for their brand. But many brand narratives are deadly dull. That's because they lack the one element that every good writer uses: conflict. Every great story, whether a novel, play, film, or TV series, is based on a dramatic conflict—a protagonist's struggle to get what he or she wants in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. That tension is what gets us interested and keeps us hooked: We want to know whether our hero will succeed or fail. Without that element of jeopardy, a story can be flat, predictable, boring. Sadly, much of branded content and brand storytelling is all of those things. The characters and setting are nice, lest they reflect badly on the organization. Wonderful thin...
