Lessons Learned in 25 Years of Freelancing

Embarking on a freelance web design career means embracing uncertainty. You’ll have to book enough gigs to keep you financially afloat. You’ll also need to weather the ups and downs. Most importantly, you’ll have to adjust to a changing landscape. Nothing is guaranteed. Thus, I was astonished and amused when the calendar flipped to 2024. This year marks the 25th anniversary of my freelance business. How time flies. I had no such milestones in mind back in 1999. My goals were relatively simple. I wanted to apply what I’d learned working for others. And I wanted to do things my way. Longevity wasn’t a priority for that 21-year-old kid. Maybe I’ve beaten the odds. But I’m still working with clients. Some have even been with me for the entire run. My goal today is to share some valuable lesson...

What I Learned from Building a Multilingual WordPress Website

On the surface, it appears that virtually every website can benefit from being multilingual. But it’s particularly so for organizations that serve the public. When important information is being shared, it needs to reach as many people as possible. Breaking down language barriers can play a vital role. Fortunately, this is an area where WordPress excels. There are several plugins available for crafting multilingual websites. And WordPress core has been translated into over 180 languages. Together, they provide a solid foundation for this type of project. This all sounds pretty amazing. But it wasn’t until recently that I got to experience it firsthand. I found that, much like learning a new language, there are plenty of details and concepts to absorb. And there were a few ups and downs alo...

SEO Experience: Lessons Learned from 9 Years in the Industry

It’s been 9 years since I started Local SEO Search. At that time, small businesses were no longer getting good results from traditional advertising, and everyone was trying to figure out how to reach customers in a digital world. I remember spending hours upon hours reading articles and experimenting with different techniques. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about SEO – both from my own experiences and from the success we’ve created for our clients. In this blog post, I’d like to share some of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years. Digital Marketing is Always Changing Anyone who works in SEO knows that the landscape is always changing. What worked last year may not work this year, and what works today may be obsolete tomorrow. This can be frustrating for businesses tha...

#422: Lessons Learned From Social Media Bullies

When Mean People Tweet (And Why They Never Win) Playground bullies grow up, my friends. And thankfully, most of them mature and leave any critical or mean ways behind. But unfortunately, some of them simply trade the monkey bars for the comments section of Instagram. In this episode, I’m talking about the social media bullying […] The post #422: Lessons Learned From Social Media Bullies appeared first on Amy Porterfield | Online Marketing Expert.

How to Succeed With Google Posts: What We Learned From Analyzing Over 1,000 Google Posts

Posted Jul 19, 2021 by Joy Hawkins Wondering how to make your Google posts perform better? In this case study, we wanted to find out what types of posts performed the best and manually analyzed over 1000 posts from a variety of different small businesses. For the full video of this presentation plus several others, check out our videos on demand from LocalU in April. In this study, we looked at both clicks according to Google My Business (GMB), and clicks and conversions inside Google Analytics (by using UTM codes). Guide to Google My Business Posts: What type of Google post performs best? Should GMB posts have titles and should they be all caps? Should GMB posts include emojis? What to include in...

Should I Pay Annually for the Local Data Aggregators? 3 Things We Learned.

Posted Mar 9, 2021 by Joy Hawkins There are several reputable companies that offer services with an annual fee that are designed to keep your online local directory listings up-to-date.  One way of doing this is to focus specifically on the major local data aggregators that push information out to tons of different websites. We did an experiment to see what happens if you sign up for one of the annual data provider services and cancel it a year later.  Not renewing caused wrong information to come back. When we did the experiment, the listing on Acxiom (which is no longer an active aggregator) did revert back to the wrong name after we chose not to renew the package annually.  When I ran this by ...
