Is Threads Really Scared of Bluesky?

Is Threads really concerned about the rise of Bluesky? Well, yes and no, though it depends on what exactly you mean by “concerned” in this context. First off, to clarify the situation, Twitter clone app Bluesky, which was originally launched as an internal Twitter project, and is staffed by former Twitter employees, has jumped from 9 million users in September, to 20 million today. Now, 20 million is still a long way off of Threads’ 275 million actives, so it’s not like Bluesky is suddenly breathing down Threads’ neck on overall popularity, while neither app is anywhere close to X, which claimed that it’s now up to 570 million monthly actives back in July. But it does seem like Threads is at least a little concerned, based on its sudden roll-out of a heap of new updates (several of whi...

Meta Tests DMs on Threads via Instagram Inbox

Good news: You’ll soon be able to send DMs on Threads. Bad news: They won’t be via a dedicated Threads inbox. This week, Meta launched a new live test of DMs on Threads, with some users seeing a new “Message” CTA button on Threads profiles. As you can see in this example, shared by Chris Messina, the new Threads DM option will technically enable you to send messages to users via the app. But as you can see in the bottom prompt, that message won’t be via Threads itself. Instead, you’ll actually be sending your DM to their Instagram inbox. Which is not so bad. I mean, it’s still a DM option within Threads, providing an advanced connection process within the app. But many will be disappointed that Threads isn’t getting its own DM inbox, which, as a replica of Twitter, would bring it more ...

Threads Launches Live Test of its API, Enabling Content Scheduling in Some Third Party Apps

Good news for social media managers, and a potentially significant update for Threads engagement overall, with Meta’s Twitter-like platform now live testing its API with selected partners, enabling, among other things, post scheduling in the app. As explained by Jesse Chen, an engineer working on Threads, the Threads team has now partnered with a range of third party platforms on the first stage of live testing for its API, which has been in development for the past few months. As per Chen: “The API currently enables users to authenticate, publish threads, and fetch the content they posted through these tools – and soon, we will enable reply moderation and insights capabilities. We are now testing with a small number of partners - Grabyo, Hootsuite, Social Newsdesk, Sprinklr, Sprout Social...

Threads Sees Significant Decline in Usage, but Opportunity for Disruption Remains

While Elon Musk continues to tinker with Twitter, and push users towards paying to get full functionality in the app, Meta’s Twitter challenger Threads has seemingly stumbled from its initial launch, based on the latest third-party usage stats. You’ve no doubt seen the numbers. Sensor Tower has reported that Threads daily active user count has dropped by around 70% since launch, data.ai reports that Threads downloads have slowed significantly, and various pundits have already predicted that Meta’s real-time news app is destined for failure, following its record-breaking ascent to 100 million members. Some of that is based in hope, with Musk’s most prominent supporters looking to amplify the news of Threads’ demise however they can. And while it’s too early to truly gauge what its potenti...

Meta Shares ‘Threads Dictionary’ to Keep Users Up to Speed on the Latest App Lingo

So is a post on Threads called a ‘Thread’ or a ‘post’? And what about re-posts – are they ‘re-threads’? It’s all a bit up in the air at the moment, in the (very) early days of the new Twitter-esque app, but to help you with the latest lingo, the Threads team has shared a ‘Threads Dictionary’ to keep you up to speed. So, to clarify: Each discussion is called a thread – so you post a thread in the app A post is an individual element within a thread (though some people are also referring to this as ‘threading’ or ‘stitching’) A shared thread is called a repost – not a ‘re-thread’ or some other variation Sharing someone else’s post is a quote thread It’s all pretty straightforward, there’s no new language to learn, as such. But there is going to be some discussion around what the actual act o...
