Is That Commercial WordPress Plugin a Good Deal?

Is That Commercial WordPress Plugin a Good Deal?

There are over 60,000 listings in the WordPress plugin repository. And while all are free to use, many offer commercial upgrades. These “pro” versions usually include more robust features and technical support. Free plugins can be quite useful. But inevitably, you’ll run into a scenario where upgrading makes sense. This is particularly relevant when your website relies on a specific plugin for eCommerce or other advanced functionality. The decision to put down your (or your client’s) hard-earned money isn’t always easy, though. Both pricing terms and licensing can vary. It seems like each plugin author has a different strategy. And then there’s the quality of the added features and support. Will they be worth the cost? And will the plugin stick around for the long term? Indeed, there can b...

Love a WordPress Plugin or Theme? Pay It Forward.

WordPress is an open-source application with an enormous ecosystem. The sheer number of available plugins and themes (many of them free) benefits developers and everyday users alike. If, for example, you need a plugin to help with SEO, you’ll find plenty of options. Even if the first one you try doesn’t do everything you need, you can easily uninstall it and switch to something else. Want to update the look of your site? There are a seemingly endless supply of themes to check out. The process of enhancing your website with a few clicks is something to behold. And it has also become second nature. If you’re a frequent user of the content management system (CMS), it’s easy to take all of this for granted. What’s often missing is the act of sharing some love with WordPress plugin and theme au...
The Ingredients of a Great WordPress Plugin

The Ingredients of a Great WordPress Plugin

There are currently over 58,000 listings in the WordPress Plugin Repository. Beyond that, there are likely thousands of free and commercial offerings available elsewhere on the web. Together, they cover a staggering number of functionalities and use cases. But not all plugins are created equally. Only a relative few are labeled as “great” by their users. And that title doesn’t necessarily last a lifetime. One false move by a developer and those 5-star reviews can quickly turn into something significantly lower. That got me thinking about the ingredients behind a great WordPress plugin. How do you quantify something so subjective? Each person will judge a plugin based on their own needs and experiences. However, I do think that there are some guiding principles that go into building somethi...

REST API WordPress Plugin – JetEngine by Crocoblock

Imagine this: you launched a website. And now, you don’t know what to do with a connection bandwidth limitation. Or maybe you use AJAX and have too many requests to cache. Or the system implies significant scaling, and you are worried about its security. Or you need to configure the interaction between a website and a mobile app based on the website. And you don't know how to deal with it. It might sound scary. Yet, the solution for it is the REST API WordPress plugin. No, it is not another terrifying technical term (well, it’s technical, but not that terrifying as it might seem). You need the JetEngine REST API. Let me tell you why: it ensures smooth scalability of system or app components interaction; the similarity of the interfaces; independent components incorporation; intermediate ...

An Ethical Dilemma for WordPress Plugin Developers

I recently discovered that a popular WordPress plugin had enabled automatic updates without explicitly informing users. How did I find out? I received emails from each site where the plugin was installed informing me that an update had been completed. But it gets better. Over a holiday break, a colleague asked me to look at a website that wasn’t loading properly. I turned on debugging to find that – you guessed it – this particular plugin was the culprit. The automatic update failed, and some key files were missing. Thankfully, manually uploading a fresh copy of the code fixed the issue. The incident got me thinking about the ethics behind this move. Not just with a specific plugin author, but all WordPress theme and plugin developers as a whole. So, I reached out to others on the Advanced...
